After your child has received Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, there is a strong foundation set for healthy oral development into the future. That’s a big step for both children and parents, as it can be a lengthy but necessary process. The good news is that they will be able to enjoy one or two years of downtime before moving onto Phase 2 orthodontics, which will help fine-tune their results and set them up for long-term success. What is Phase 2 Orthodontic Treatment?
During Phase 1 treatment, your child may have received a palatal expander, space maintainers, headgear, or limited braces to help guide the growth of their jawbone and alignment of their teeth as they grew in. This helped set a foundation for success by minimizing the intensity of orthodontic interventions needed as they got older.
Phase 2 treatment typically takes place a couple of years after Phase 1, usually between 11 and 14 years old. The treatment typically includes braces designed to correct bite problems, address misalignment, and build on the existing treatment’s success.
Does My Child Need Phase 1 Orthodontics?
If your child received Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, it’s not always necessary for them to receive Phase 2 treatment. However, many children can benefit from this additional level of orthodontics in the long-run. Our team at Casady Square Orthodontics will assess your child’s teeth and bite for signs that further treatment may be needed. If we identify some concerns that we feel could increase their risk of oral health problems or dental disease in the future, we will discuss the best path forward for them.
By investing in proactive interceptive orthodontics like Phase 1 and Phase 2 treatment, you can help your child avoid ongoing problems down the road, such as cavities, sleep issues, and TMJ pain. Because of this, we always recommend that children be brought in for an orthodontic evaluation starting at age seven if parents have concerns.
What Happens After Phase 2 Orthodontics?
After your child finishes Phase 2 orthodontic treatment in Oklahoma City, they will need to wear a retainer to make all of their hard work stick! Our team will design a custom retainer that we know will work best for them, sometimes that can be a removable appliance, and in other cases, we may recommend affixing their retainer behind their teeth to keep them aligned.
