Getting braces is an exciting step toward a straighter, healthier smile, but it is normal to feel nervous about what the experience will be like. You might wonder whether getting braces hurts, how your mouth will feel afterward, or how long it takes to get used to them. The good news is that most discomfort is temporary, and your mouth gradually adjusts as you become familiar with your new orthodontic appliances.
What Does Getting Braces Feel Like?
The process of getting braces is generally painless. Your orthodontist will clean and prepare your teeth before attaching brackets with dental adhesive. A wire is then connected to the brackets to apply gentle pressure that gradually moves your teeth into their desired positions.
You may feel pressure while the braces are being placed, but you should not experience significant pain. The appointment can take some time, and keeping your mouth open throughout the process may cause mild jaw fatigue.
Afterward, your teeth may begin to feel tender as they respond to the pressure. This sensation often develops several hours after your appointment rather than immediately.
What Does the Adjustment Period Feel Like?
The first few days with braces can be the most challenging because your teeth, gums, cheeks, and lips need time to adapt.
Tooth soreness: Your teeth may feel tender when biting or chewing. Some people describe the sensation as a dull ache or pressure, similar to having a bruise around their teeth. This discomfort is usually most noticeable during the first few days and gradually improves.
Irritation inside your mouth: Brackets and wires can rub against your cheeks and lips, creating sore spots. Your mouth will gradually become accustomed to the appliances, and orthodontic wax can help protect irritated areas.
Changes in eating: Foods that require substantial chewing may feel uncomfortable initially. Softer options, such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and pasta, can make mealtimes easier while your teeth are tender.
Changes in speaking: You may notice slight speech changes as your tongue and lips adjust to the braces. Most people adapt quickly, and practicing reading aloud can help you become comfortable speaking again.
How Long Does It Take to Get Used to Braces?
Many patients begin feeling more comfortable within a few days to a week. However, the adjustment period varies from person to person.
You may also experience temporary soreness after routine orthodontic adjustments because the braces continue applying pressure to move your teeth. These episodes generally become manageable with time and proper care.
To ease discomfort, eat soft foods, rinse gently with warm salt water if recommended, and use orthodontic wax when brackets irritate your mouth. Over-the-counter pain medication may help when appropriate, but follow the label and your orthodontist’s advice.
Contact your orthodontist if pain is severe or persistent, or if a wire or bracket breaks and causes injury.
Remember, temporary discomfort is part of the adjustment process, not a sign that something is necessarily wrong. With patience and consistent care, you’ll become more comfortable with your braces as you work toward a straighter, healthier smile.
