As a result, some patients experience swollen or tender gums during orthodontic treatment. While mild gum irritation is fairly common, persistent swelling shouldn’t be ignored. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to keep your gums healthy throughout your orthodontic journey.

Why Do Gums Become Swollen with Braces?

Brackets and wires create additional places where food particles and plaque can collect. If these areas aren’t cleaned thoroughly, bacteria can irritate the gums, leading to inflammation known as gingivitis.

Swollen gums may also occur shortly after your braces are adjusted. As your teeth begin moving, the surrounding tissues can become temporarily sensitive. However, this type of discomfort usually improves within a few days.

In some cases, swollen gums may be caused by hormonal changes, certain medications, or an underlying health condition, making it important to discuss ongoing symptoms with your dentist or orthodontist.

Improve Your Oral Hygiene Routine

The best way to reduce swollen gums is by keeping your teeth and braces as clean as possible. Brush after every meal, paying close attention to the areas around your brackets and along the gumline.

Flossing every day is equally important, even though it may take a little extra time with braces. Floss threaders, orthodontic floss, or water flossers can make cleaning between your teeth much easier.

An antimicrobial or fluoride mouth rinse may also help reduce bacteria and keep your mouth feeling fresh.

Watch What You Eat

Sticky, sugary, and crunchy foods can become trapped around braces, increasing plaque buildup and making swollen gums worse. Limiting sugary snacks and choosing nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy products can support healthier gums throughout treatment.

Drinking plenty of water also helps wash away food particles and encourages saliva production, which naturally protects your teeth and gums.

Know When to Call Your Dentist

Mild gum tenderness is common from time to time, but significant swelling, persistent bleeding, severe pain, or gums that begin growing over the brackets should be evaluated by your dentist or orthodontist.

They can determine whether your symptoms are caused by plaque buildup, gum disease, or another issue and recommend the appropriate treatment. Professional cleanings may also be needed to remove hardened plaque that brushing alone cannot eliminate.

Swollen gums don’t have to be part of your braces experience. By maintaining excellent oral hygiene, eating a healthy diet, and keeping your regular dental and orthodontic appointments, you can minimize inflammation and protect your oral health. If your gums remain swollen or uncomfortable despite good home care, don’t wait to seek professional advice.

About the Author

Dr. Payam Ishani earned his dental degree from the University of California – San Francisco School of Dentistry before completing specialty training in orthodontics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
